A river cruise can be a great family trip — one unpacking, a new place every day, and short distances between ports. But most river sailings are designed for adults. Family departures fix that with kid-friendly excursions, onboard activities, family hosts and other families to travel with.
Programs we have confirmed
Adventures by Disney on AmaWaterways
Family river cruises with Disney-trained Adventure Guides and a kids’ program. A Rhône itinerary on AmaKristina ran in 2026 (with one adults-only sailing), and Rhine and Danube updates were announced for 2027.
Tauck Bridges
Tauck’s family brand runs summer Blue Danube family sailings and a December Holiday Magic family sailing on the Danube.
Uniworld Generations
Family departures with hosts, a kids’ lounge, cooking and dessert classes and kid-friendly dining. Burgundy & Provence sailings ran in July 2026, with Rhine, Danube and Nile family departures planned for 2027.

What Families Like
- Hands-on excursions: scavenger hunts, cooking classes, biking, kayaking.
- Castles, windmills, and ships passing through locks.
- Short sailing days, so nobody gets bored.
- Grandparents and grandchildren sharing a trip with built-in downtime.
Teenagers often enjoy the independence of exploring a town on their own between excursions.
Which River for a Family Trip?
The Danube is the most common family river: Vienna, the Wachau Valley’s castles and abbeys, and Budapest give a good mix of city and countryside, and Salzburg (for The Sound of Music fans) is a day trip from Danube ports. The Rhine is famous for the castles of its Middle Rhine gorge, which go down well with younger children, and usually ends in Amsterdam. The Rhône in southern France pairs Roman ruins and lavender country with outdoor activities like cycling and kayaking.
Whichever river you choose, a family departure changes the feel of the ship. On a regular sailing, children may be the only ones on board and evenings are built around adult dinners. On a family departure, the meal times, menus, excursions and evening activities are planned with kids in mind, and the other guests expect children around.
Grandparent trips
River cruises are popular for “skip-gen” trips, where grandparents travel with grandchildren. The pace suits both ages, and the family hosts on themed departures give grandparents a break while the children are busy.
Before You Book
- Confirm the minimum age for the line and the specific sailing.
- Ask for connecting or triple cabins early — they sell out first.
- Check how the kids’ program works on non-sailing days.
- Look at pre- and post-cruise stays, e.g., Amsterdam, Vienna or Paris, to break up the flights.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can children go on river cruises?
On many lines, yes, but minimum ages and facilities differ. Some lines are adults-only, so check before you book. Family departures are the easiest way to sail with children.
When do family sailings run?
Mostly during the summer school holidays (June to August), with some holiday-season sailings in December.
Are there cabins for families?
Some ships have connecting cabins or cabins for three. They are limited, so book early. Our advisors can find the family-friendly cabins.
