For a few weeks each spring the bulb fields between Haarlem and Leiden turn into stripes of red, yellow, pink and purple. A tulip-time cruise is timed for exactly that window. Most sail round trip from Amsterdam on the rivers, canals and estuaries of the Netherlands and Belgium, with short sailing distances and a lot of time ashore.
Keukenhof
The famous spring garden near Lisse: millions of bulbs planted in themed beds, open only in spring. Tulip itineraries normally include a visit.
Windmills
Kinderdijk’s row of 18th-century windmills is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a common stop. Zaanse Schans is another favorite.
Dutch towns
Canal towns and old harbors like Hoorn, Enkhuizen and Veere, plus cities such as Rotterdam and Arnhem.
Flemish cities
Antwerp, Ghent and Bruges: guild houses, cathedrals, chocolate and Belgian beer.

What to Expect
- Short distances, lots of shore time. The Netherlands is compact, so many days are spent in port.
- Mixed weather. April can be bright, cool, windy or wet in a single afternoon. Pack layers and a waterproof jacket.
- Flat and easy walking. Many towns are flat, and bicycles are everywhere — some lines offer guided rides.
- Crowds at Keukenhof. It is popular. Ship tours usually come with timed entry, which helps.
- Amsterdam either side. Most sailings start and end there; a pre- or post-cruise night or two is worth it.
If spring dates don’t work, the same waterways are sailed in summer and autumn too — you lose the tulips, but keep the windmills, canal towns and Flemish cities.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is the best time for a tulip cruise?
Tulip cruises run in spring, usually from late March into early May. Keukenhof gardens are typically open from about mid-March to mid-May. Early-season sailings may see more crocuses and daffodils; mid-April is usually the peak for tulips, but it depends on the weather that year.
Is Keukenhof always included?
On dedicated tulip itineraries a Keukenhof visit is usually part of the program, but check your sailing — departures right at the start or end of the season may differ.
Do tulip cruises go to Belgium?
Many do. Routes commonly include Antwerp, Ghent or Bruges alongside Dutch stops such as Kinderdijk, Hoorn, Enkhuizen, Arnhem or Middelburg.
